What's Happening to the Education system?
By India Albert
With President Trump’s first term in office, there has been many changes occurring not only in America, but all around the world. Whether its changes with the foreign policy or a ban on contraception, there’s been a few modifications. And this poses the question of: What is going to happen to America’s education system?
Just recently in American politics, history has been made. This marks the first time that the vice president was needed to break a tie on a cabinet nomination.
With a 51-50 vote, Betsy DeVos is now the confirmed secretary of the nation’s education.
You may ask: who is Betsy DeVos and what is the issue with this?
DeVos is a Republican donor, who has no experience with education. She is a firm supporter in charter and vouchers. Charter schools are run by people who have very little educational background.
Is it a good idea for her to lead the nation's education system? No. However, former secretary of education, Lamar Alexander is siding with DeVos. Alexander claims that “She led the most effective public school reform movement over the last few years.”
There still seems to be a discomfort with her new position. Teacher unions and some charter organizations have been protesting. Just recently, she was refused the right to enter a school in Washington.
As of now, it’s not looking so well for Betsy DeVos.
I encourage the citizens to look more into this topic and fight this issue.
